Fire alarm November 8, Thalerova dormitory – failure to comply with the prohibition on cooking in the room
On Saturday, November 8, 2025, at 11:30 p.m., a fire alarm was triggered at Thalerova dormitory.
The cause was the use of a cooker inside a residential unit — specifically in a room where a pork steak had been burned in a frying pan. As a result, the room became filled with smoke, which subsequently activated the fire detector.
The fire detectors installed in the rooms are set to a higher sensitivity to smoke than those in the kitchens, which are also equipped with ventilation systems above the cooking area.
Had the resident prepared the meal in the kitchen, the fire alarm most likely would not have been triggered, and there would have been no need for a midnight evacuation of the residents — an extremely unpleasant and unnecessary disruption to the dormitory’s operations.
I would therefore like to remind everyone once again that, according to the dormitory regulations, cooking and food preparation are permitted only in the kitchen areas. The use of cookers, deep fryers, electric kettles, toasters, and other appliances in the rooms is strictly prohibited, as their use poses a fire hazard and can also damage the furniture and room equipment.
