UNILEAD Project
Application of the recommendations of the UNILEAD project at the Jarov Campus.
The Prague University of Economics and Business in Prague (VŠE) has been actively involved in the topic of sustainability since 2022, when it became a key element of the UNILEAD inter-university projects, which it followed up in 2024 with the Sustainable Education and Environmental Development (SEED) project from the Green Deal call of the National Recovery Plan.
The VŠE project aims to support the revision of existing study programs and the creation of new programs and courses of lifelong learning focusing on the topics of green and digital transformation, as well as creating its own strategy in this area for the VŠE. The project from component 7.4 of the NPO Adaptation of School Programs – Support for Green Skills and Sustainability at Universities runs from the beginning of 2024 to the end of December 2025 with an allocated funding amount of CZK 42 million for the VŠE.
SÚZ/FMD VŠE in Prague responded to the UNILEAD project coordinated by MUNI Brno and identified measures suitable for implementation at the Jarov Campus. The Director of SÚZ VŠE in Prague summarized the implementation of these measures in Order of the Director No. 4/2023.
Evaluation of the fulfillment of this order:
I. Waste management area:
- SÚZ/FMD had an internal audit of waste management prepared. The implementation of the recommendations from this audit is summarized in the Director’s Order No. 1/2023 and is continuously monitored.
- Waste sorting is promoted on information screens in individual dormitories. Residents can sort waste into paper, glass, plastics, metals, textiles, and biowaste.
- SÚZ/FMD supports the development of LOKNI filtered water dispensers, which lead to savings in plastic beverage containers.
II. Biodiversity area:
- SÚZ/FMD, in cooperation with the Department of Environment of the Prague 3 municipal district, is continuously renewing and revitalizing tree and shrub planting on the Jarov Campus.
- SÚZ/FMD is installing four insect hotels with information signs on the Jarov Campus.
- SÚZ/FMD is installing four bird feeders, squirrel feeders, and one rabbit feeder on the Jarov Campus.
III. Sustainable student mobility:
- The information screens in the SÚZ/FMD dormitories promote shared transport using Nextbike bicycles. Bicycle parking stands are at the main entrance to the Palach dormitory.
- Support for parking shared Uniqway cars in the Jarov Campus parking lot cannot be implemented because Škoda Auto has terminated the project without compensation.
IV. Energy management:
- SÚZ/FMD has installed a temperature control system in the dormitory buildings, ensuring the temperature is maintained between 19 °C and 22 °C.
- SÚZ/FMD promotes saving electricity, heat, and water on information screens in dormitories.
- SÚZ/FMD is gradually installing LED lighting in individual dormitories with motion switches.
- As part of the reconstruction of the dormitories, attention is paid to their maximum possible insulation.
V. Catering:
- A waste-free system for taking away meals, REkrabička, is used in individual canteens.
- Adjustments to the menu are continuously discussed with individual canteen tenants with regard to healthy nutrition.
VI. Responsible purchasing:
- In all procurement procedures, emphasis is placed on the principles of responsible public procurement, especially on the employment of people disadvantaged in the labor market, on the involvement of social enterprises, the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises, and on an economically acceptable solution that will enable the acquisition of more environmentally friendly performance, in particular one that will lead to a reduction in the consumption of energy, water, raw materials, the production of pollutants released into the air, water, soil, reduction of the carbon footprint, etc.
VII. Water management:
- As part of the vegetation restoration on the Jarov Campus, see point II., care is taken to minimize water evaporation from the land.
- Areas that are not mowed are defined within the Jarov Campus.
- Within the SÚZ/FMD, consistent maintenance of water taps and flushing devices is carried out to prevent unnecessary water leakage.
- Water saving is promoted on the information screens in the dormitories.
VIII. Green construction:
- Renovations of dormitory buildings are carried out to achieve maximum possible energy savings.
